Sandro Mazzola

Sandro Mazzola, ricordando i suoi esordi, dice: "La gente veniva a vedermi e pensava a mio padre Valentino, ma io non ero bravo come lui ...Se c'era uno che mi criticava, ingigantivo le sue parole. All'inizio sbagliai un paio di partite e un giornale della sera scrisse: "Se si chiamasse Pettirossi..." Te lo do io il Pettirossi!"

Sandro è stato Campione d'Europa nel 1968. Dopo l'esordio venne impiegato da Helenio Herrera, rivelandosi un vero fuoriclasse. E' stato capace di scrivere pagine indimenticabili nella storia della Grande Inter, alla quale si è dedicato anche come dirigente.

TORINO - Arrivando a sessanta, signor Mazzola, cosa ha pensato?
"Mi sono spaventato, perché inconsciamente avevo rimosso questo traguardo. Non è ancora tempo che dia tutte le risposte alle mie domande".
Cosa pensa che la gente ricordi, di Mazzola?
"La correttezza e i gol".
Quali gol?
"Quello di Budapest, entrando in porta con la palla. A Vienna, con il Real. A Basilea, con la nazionale, dopo sette palleggi consecutivi".
Lei era forte?
"Sì, moltissimo. Ho vinto tutto tranne i mondiali: secondo dietro a Pelé".
Che era ragionevolmente più bravo di lei.
"Mah, non so. Lui non è venuto in Italia, mi manca quella verifica. Per cui dico che forse era meglio. Ma solo forse".
E tra lei e Rivera?
"Risposta scontata. Ma lui dice il contrario".
Alla fine, non teme di passare alla storia solo per la staffetta?
"Abbiamo giocato insieme 50 partite, e si ricorda solo di quelle tre in cui ci siamo dati il cambio: il solito vizio italiano. Fra l'altro, quella staffetta è nata da un mal di pancia".
Ovvero?
"Mi colpì la vendetta di Montezuma alla vigilia della partita con il Messico, passai la notte in bagno. Il giorno dopo, Valcareggi capì che potevo giocare solo un tempo e programmò la staffetta. Curioso: si è parlato tanto di una cosa nata per una questione di cacca".
Quanto le è pesato chiamarsi Mazzola?
"Un macigno: ero soltanto il figlio di Valentino, un erede neanche troppo degno. Pensai pure di smetterla con il calcio, tant'è vero che mi diedi al basket. Feci un provino con la Simmenthal: mi presero, ero un buon play. Ma poi mi sono detto: che diavolo ci faccio qui? E sono tornato al calcio, nonostante mia madre non volesse".
Perché?
"Perché il calcio gli aveva portato via il marito e temeva che distruggesse pure me. Mi requisiva il borsone, le scarpe. Poi raggiunse non compromesso, con me e mio fratello Ferruccio: se fossimo stati promossi a scuola, avremmo potuto giocare. È per questo che mi sono diplomato in ragioneria".
Ed è anche per questo che ha avuto un rapporto conflittuale con il ricordo di suo padre?
"No, anche se forse è stata la rabbia di non averlo, ad avermi spinto fin qui. Forse con le sue coccole non sarei diventato un calciatore. Più che un conflitto, è stata una sfida, anche al dolore. I miei si erano separati, io vivevo con papà, conobbi mio fratello soltanto quando aveva già sei anni. Ma forse è questa storia che mi ha spinto a stare sempre dalle parte dei più deboli. Cioè del Toro. E dell'Inter, che è il Toro dei ricchi".
Tra lei e il Toro cosa c'è?
"Per molti anni amore e odio, non è stato facile venire qui. Ma mi ha spinto mio padre, a farlo".
Suo padre?
"Il rapporto con lui l'ho creato negli anni. Ci parliamo, o almeno io credo di parlare con lui. È stato a lui che ho chiesto se fosse giusto tornare a Torino".
E che risposta le diede?
"Se sono qui...".
E ha chiuso un cerchio?
"Sì, ma la mia vita è stata sempre così, un pazzesco ricorso. Ho esordito in serie A nel giorno dell'ultima di Boniperti. E sapete dove ho debuttato, con la nazionale juniores?".
Dove?
"A Lisbona. Il posto da cui mio padre non è tornato".
All'Inter, il destino l'ha tradita?
"È stata la mia famiglia, ma a una certa età bisogna avere il coraggio di andarsene da casa. Il problema è che sono stato l'unico a pagare per una rapina a mano armata, quello scudetto che la Juve ci ha portato via nel '98".
Chi è il più forte giocatore che ha mai visto?
"Di Stefano. Ma forse perché mi dicono che assomigliava a mio padre".
Quello con cui ha giocato?
"Suarez: mi ha insegnato tutto".
Quello che ha diretto?
"Ronaldo. Ma è un bambino viziato. Meno male che Moratti ha scelto Cuper, quest'estate. Con Simoni non andò così. Anche allora Ronaldo disse: o io o l'allenatore".
Con Herrera non sarebbe capitato.
"Herrera era un pazzo alla guida di una squadra di pazzi. Ma nella sua pazzia, ha cambiato il calcio: la metà dei sistemi di allenamento di oggi li ha inventati Herrera".
Cosa sogna adesso?
"Di giocare a pallone, ogni notte. La cosa strana è che non riesco mai a capire con che maglia. Parlando da sveglio, sogno di ridare al Toro i giovani che una volta sapeva fare nascere. Forse per chiudere un altro cerchio".
È vero che stava per portare Berlusconi all'Inter?
"Verissimo. Fraizzoli voleva vendere, Berlusconi aveva capito che il calcio sarebbe stato un bel business. Passai una settimana a fare da spola fra il Fraizza e il Berlusca, che si sarebbe accontentato di prendere anche solo il 49 per cento. Ma Fraizzoli temeva che avrebbe comunque comandato Silvio, e lasciò perdere".
Quando farà l'ultimo bilancio?
"Fra altri sessant'anni".

Giancarlo Rinaldi reports Mazzola marvels The football field is not normally a place where family values flourish. The single-minded pursuit of the self that the game requires can often escalate sibling rivalry to a whole new level. And history is littered with the stories of sporting sons who could never live up to the reputation of their famous forebears. More often than not, it seems, you are better off leaving the family baggage on the touchline. That is what makes the story of Valentino and Sandro Mazzola so singularly exceptional. Both father and son were players of the highest calibre who wrote themselves ample chapters in the history of the Italian game. On the field of play, at least, no family has made quite such an impact. Perhaps it was their unique story which helped young Sandro follow and even surpass many of his father’s achievements. Valentino lost his life in the Superga air crash in 1949, leaving his young family to fend for themselves. In many ways it was a case of the young man carrying on the work his father had started rather than struggling to live up to his reputation. Although both players donned the No 10 shirt their footballing stories and styles could hardly have been more different. Mazzola senior was a robust figure as the game in the immediate years around World War 2 required. An inspirational character, he was also gifted with great skills and a scoring ability which was second to none in the era in which he played. Sandro was, in appearance at least, a more frail figure. But the same skills shone through in his play and also guaranteed him more than his fair share of goals. Valentino’s footballing story began with the Alfa Romeo factory team in Milan, but it was only when military service took him to Venice in 1939 that he really started to break through. The lagoon team were starting to build an interesting side - which would take their one and only major honour in 1941 with the Coppa Italia. It was there that Mazzola teamed up with his ‘twin’ attacker Ezio Loik. Born on the same day, they both transferred to Torino in 1942 and would both die in the plane crash of 1949. Before that terrible day Valentino established himself as the greatest player of his generation. Five League championships, a couple of Italian Cups and over 100 Serie A goals, despite the disruption of the war, were the hallmark of his quality. He was killed at the age of 30 when there was still surely a lengthy international career ahead of him and his Grande Torino teammates. In his last interview before the crash he shared his view of the game with a local Portuguese reporter. "I have to say that I consider football to be a very simple game," he said. "You will win as long as you don’t always play in the same way. You have got to add some variations to make your game more dynamic. There has to be room for improvisation outside of classical tactics. But I am of the opinion that modern football must be above all a team game." His theories have been echoed in the sport throughout the rest of the century and beyond. And even though Sandro was only seven when he lost his father it is clear that the man had a huge effect on his son prior to the dreadful events of May 1949. "Every time I think of that day it hurts, I feel an awful pain in the pit of my stomach and I can do nothing about it," admitted Mazzola junior. "The fact is that you try not to think about it and put it at the back of your mind but whenever the anniversary comes around all the bad memories come flooding back." Still, part of that legacy were the footballing skills which had evidently been transferred from father to son. They also shared a strength of character required to reach the very top of the game. Sandro would be the first to recognise his debt to his father. "Almost since the day I was born my dad would help me put my boots on and take me along to training, I was a mascot," said Sandro. "There must be something in the genes because he certainly transmitted his love of football to me." The young Sandro was always likely to be the focus of attention given his famous father and Inter were happy to find a place for him in the all-conquering side they were building. Despite making his debut in a record defeat - the 9-1 hammering from Juve in a match where Inter fielded their youth team - he was destined to mark the club’s history like few others before him. Inter were desperate to make their mark in Europe and Mazzola delivered the extra class they needed to make that leap forward. Back-to-back European Cups and World Club Cups cemented both the Nerazzurri’s and their No 10’s reputation at the highest level. An undisputed legend at club level, things never quite went as easily for Mazzola with the national team. Continual indecision between himself and Milan’s Golden Boy Gianni Rivera meant he did not quite make the impact he might have. Still, 70 caps and 22 goals were a fairly major contribution. Mazzola was also part of the 1968 European Championship winning side and the team so cruelly destroyed by Pele’s Brazilians in the 1970 World Cup. After retirement in 1977 there was no question of Mazzola disappearing from the game and he covered a number of roles for Inter. With more than 400 games and 116 Serie A goals they were unlikely to discard a man who became a symbol for the club. But lately a new temptation has drawn him away from the Stadio Giuseppe Meazza and back towards his family’s past. A post with Torino beckoned and Mazzola could not resist trying to rebuild a great team with one of the grandest old clubs of Italy. If anyone can achieve it, then probably a Mazzola can. STAR RATING 8/10 Because of the Superga disaster, Vincenzo Mazzola never got the chance to complete his football career. But he was a truly inspirational figure of his time. Parlando di Mazzola, è doveroso ricordare che Sandro è "figlio d'arte": il padre era il mitico capitano e interno sinistro del grande Torino e della nazionale italiana: Valentino Mazzola.   Valentino nacque il 26 gennaio 1919 a Cassano d'Adda. Padre di Alessandro e di Ferruccio,  fu un calciatore di grandissima classe e di temperamento.  Mezz'ala sinistra, nella stagione 1942-43 passò dall'Alfa Romeo di Milano al Venezia, incontrando Ezio Loik e trovando con lui un'intesa formidabile.  Le loro caratteristiche si integravano alla perfezione e la loro perfetta combinazione fu notata anche dal commissario tecnico azzurro Vittorio Pozzo.  L' esordio di Valentino Mazzola in Nazionale avvenne il 5 aprile 1942, a Genova, in piena guerra, e si concluse con la sconfitta per 4-0 della Croazia: Valentino non segnò, ma partecipò a tutte le azioni migliori.  Segnò invece per la prima volta in maglia Azzurra il 19 aprile 1942, in Italia - Spagna, vinta per 4-0.  L' 11 novembre 1945, dopo la guerra, nella partita Italia-Svizzera, a Zurigo (conclusa 4-4) contribuì a costruire tutte le azioni che portarono gli  Azzurri a segnare.  Nella partita contro l'Austria, del 1 dicembre 1946, a Milano, vinta per 3 a 2, fu lui stesso a segnare. La sua prima grossa sconfitta in Nazionale arrivò per lui nella partita disputata a Vienna, il 9 novembre 1947.  Il "Valente"  capitano esordiente, ebbe comunque modo di rifarsi il 14 dicembre 1947, contro la Cecoslovacchia, costruendo pazientemente assieme a Loik la vittoria (finì 3-1). Il 4 aprile del 1948, anche la Francia si trovò disarmata, di fronte al gioco costruito dai nostri due formidabili interni. Valentino Mazzola divenne una vera leggenda, tanto che anni dopo il grande attaccante brasiliano Josè Altafini, venuto a giocare in Italia, fu soprannominato "Mazzola".  La sua ultima partita in Nazionale la giocò a Madrid, contro la Spagna, vincendo per 3-1. In questa circostanza, per la seconda volta,  non faceva coppia con Loik ma con Benito Lorenzi. Dovendo esprimere in numeri la sua brillante carriera in Nazionale, si dovrebbero ricordare i suoi 12 incontri in maglia azzurra ( 9 vittorie, un pareggio e 2 sconfitte) e che per 10 volte fu in tandem a centrocampo con Ezio Loik, una con Castigliano (Italia-Austria 3-2) e una con Lorenzi, detto "Veleno".
